Tom Hatch | Principal | Terry Sandford High School
Prior to my first day on the job I knew the most important thing I had to do was build trust. I created what I call the Pyramid of Trust. During the summer I met with parents, teachers, students, and staff and I discussed a variety of things but ultimately I talked about the Pyramid of Trust. The capstone of the pyramid is trust. Each wall represents an expectation that I had of myself and my staff. Those expectations are Positive Relationships, Open Lines of Communication, Give People What They Need, and Give People the Support They Need. A foundation of high moral, school spirit, and pride becomes the base.
In my conversations I talked about the importance of building positive relationships and how we treat each other. This is accomplished by having open lines of communication and creating two way channels for dialogue. Part of effective communication is being able to listen...not just hear. Once we are listening then we are able to determine what is needed. This does not mean giving people what they want. It is important to give support in whatever form that may take. From these actions people began to trust.
Once trust was established the culture changed. The climate of higher staff moral and school spirit and pride has taken hold. Faculty, staff, students, parents, and the community have all bought in to this and together we are moving Fayetteville Terry Sanford in the right direction with our ultimate goal of ALWAYS doing what's best for students...Here at FTS!
