I believe, that if you want different, do different, you are the change.
Virtually every position I've ever held within education has been a created one. It is also very fitting that my background is not one that is reflective of a person who knew they would be an educator. However, throughout my life, it has been educators that have revealed to me my true potential and helped me to uncover hidden talents I never knew existed. It is with that pedigree that I approach each day, child and family with as I attempt to change the world one child at a time.
I currently serve as the Youth Development Coordinator for Cumberland County Schools in Fayetteville, North Carolina. This position was created to help address the dropout, suspension and alternative reassignment rates within some of the district most challenging schools. Providing students and families who were once disengaged and disenfranchised from the educational process with options for success after graduation and resources that address the various needs within the home, has allowed us to see a drastic decrease in the number of students who were suspended or reassigned to alternative schools as well as the district is celebrating a student dropout rate that is below the state average.
Meeting students and their families where they are and not leaving them there is our ministry and mission and we are certainly seeing the fruits of our labors one student at a time.
